Murmuring piano undercurrents reminiscent of Tori Amos. Lyrics, simultaneously naturalistic and metrically complex, that have been favorably compared to the work of Stephen Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, and Jason Mraz. He writes about everyday subject matter—a cup of coffee between old friends, the tense silence between lovers after an argument—but his songs recognize the universal, transcendent truths that meet us in these mundane moments. These are our experiences that he writes about, not his alone.

David’s originals have been featured at global denominational gatherings of both the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches and the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations, in venues ranging from Mineapolis, Minnesota to Cape Town, South Africa; and his arrangement of the Albert Brumley classic “I’ll Fly Away” received high praise from Jeannie Gagné of the Berklee College of Music.

The “Meditation on Breathing” (#1009 in the UU “teal hymnal,” Singing the Journey) is the chorus of this larger piece, which Sarah Dan Jones wrote just after September 11, 2001. In Sarah Dan’s words, “the verses speak to the need to ease my fears and seek solace in the wake of the tragedy.” Arranged in recognition of the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, this version supports the solo vocals with 4-part backing choir with a “gospel feel.” Sarah Dan has generously allowed me to share in the proceeds from sales of this arrangement, 50-50.
