When Jelly Beans Are Criminal

A jelly bean is just a piece of candy,
and reading never made a kid a brat.
Some fam’lies have a diff’rent count of moms or dads than others,
and there’s nothing wrong with that!

What’s true for you is all just fine and dandy,
but diff’rence is the sweetest spice of life.
And the fact that we are diff’rent doesn’t have to cause an episode
of silly, dweebish strife!

Oh, when jelly beans are criminal,
then kids and men and women’ll
cry out as one ‘til they annul the law!
‘Cause when the laws’re just plain silly,
then we know that we should really
join our voices in one song!

Now, some good laws are written to protect us,
and some are there to keep us safe at night.
But when somebody tries to write a law that isn’t fair,
then we should say, “Hey! That’s not right!”

Oh, when jelly beans are criminal,
then kids and men and women’ll
cry out as one ‘til they annul the law!
‘Cause when the laws’re just plain silly,
then we know that we should really
join our voices in one song!

An anthem written to accompany Rev. Erika Hewett’s worship script, “The Duke Who Outlawed Jelly Beans” (from Story, Song and Spirit: Fun and Creative Worship for All Ages, available from the UUA Bookstore and elsewhere).
Print music for this piece is available at $1.00 per copy.
One copy of Director’s Score and as many copies as needed of the kazoo part are included with the purchase of choral copies.

(Note: Kazoos are not included. For the premiere of this piece, we got a pack of 12 kazoos from Amazon for under 7 bucks that sounded gloriously silly....)
